Deforestation is an extremely critical factor if we are going to achieve a sustainable planet.
Not only are the dwindling remains of forested areas of concern for the regeneration of oxygen and reduction of CO2 but the removal of wildlife habitat will cause more animal-human contact with the potential spread of disease.
Most informed people now agree that widespread clearing of forests is done to enable short term benefits such as having more area for cattle to feed. Unfortunately the growing world population and its general craving for meat and dairy products is unsustainable. The increased urbanization and ageing population also means that fewer people have first hand experience with the rapid rate of deforestation and habitat destruction. Deforestation is mainly in more remote areas for the ultimate greed of the international markets.
